mystery men

"We're not your classic heroes, we're the other guys."

Starring: Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Paul Reubens, Claire Forlani, Wes Studi, Janeane Garofalo, Kel Mitchell, Geoffrey Rush, Lena Olin, Tom Waits, Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Lewis, Eddie Izzard, and Pras.

A Lawrence Gordon/Lloyd Levin/Dark Horse production, Mystery Men is being directed by commercial-veteran director Kinka Usher, who makes his feature film directorial debut.

Based on the Dark Horse comic, Mystery Men casts Stiller, Azaria, Macy, Reubens, Studi, Garofalo and Mitchell as seven lame superhero wannabes, who are called upon to use their dubious "powers" to save a bustling metropolis when Champion Cityís beloved real superhero-protector, Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear), is kidnapped. The wannabe heroes square off against the vile villain, Casanova Frankenstein (Academy AwardÒ winner Geoffrey Rush), and his beautiful sidekick, Dr. Anabel Leek (Lena Olin), as they try to stop Casanovaís dastardly plot to take over the city.
Mystery Men is produced by Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson. Bob Engelman is the executive producer. Neil Cuthbert and Brent Forrester wrote the screenplay based on the Dark Horse comic created by Bob Burden.

Eddie says:

I play a bad guy, because English people play bad guys, and Geoffrey Rush...he's Casanova Frankenstein, and I was his [sidekick] initially in the script, and it was like "yes boss, Ok Casanova, anything you say"... And I said I'll do it as long as.... I kept saying look, I'm Iago, and you're Othello, I'm Iago, so I kept trying to up my status, and get better lines, and I changed my hair, I've got this big hair...."

Plot summary (iMDB):

In order to generate more endorsement revenue, Champion City's resident superhero Captain Amazing arranges for the release of supervillian Casanova Frankenstein, only to be captured by him. The city's fate rests in the hands of seven loser superhero wannabes: the fork-flinging Blue Rajah, the shovel-wielding Shoveler, the posessed bowling ball-hurling Bowler, the flatulent Spleen, the only-when-nobody's-looking Invisible Boy, the mysterious Sphinx, and the perpetually-angry Mr. Furious.
