Comedy's worst-kept secret...

One of the most acclaimed comedians of the Nineties plays his first big date in Manchester in a few weeks. And if you are keen to go I suggest you get your tickets as quickly as possible.

Eddie Izzard has had an extraordinary career: glowing reviews in all the best newspapers, a British Comedy Award, and many others, for his stand-up act, and earlier in the year even a nomination for an Olivier (theatre) award for "outstanding achievement" for the same act, seen by 60,000 people in two short seasons in London's West End. He has even appeared as an actor in two West End comedies.

But few people out side the live comedy circuit know much about him. The reason is simply that Eddie doesn't like television much, and isn't generally known to the public at large. His occasional appearances on TV have mainly been on panel games, where he hasn't exactly shone. He is the stand-up comedy world's worst-kept secret!

A bit of an oddball - often seen in make-up and a dress, and not necessarilly for a laugh - Izzard is from that great line of scatalogical comics whose stock-in-trade is dazzling incention and verbal dexterity rather than gags.

His show at the Free Trade Hall on February 11 is certain to be one of the funniest nights of the years - and likely to sell out fast.
